Teddy Pendergrass, One of my favorite soul singers of all time, finally succumbed to his long battle with colon cancer on Wednesday night. This morning while listening to "Soul Town" on Sirius/XM, I noticed a long sweep of Teddy Pendergrass tunes. While I enjoyed this very much, I began to wonder if teddy had died. My mind wondered for a moment thinking "didn't he pass away awhile back?" In the hustle and bustle of everyday life, it sometimes hard to remember who has passed on to the other side and who is still with us. As it turns out, teddy Pendergrass did pass away and was part of the discussion at the table at lunch today in Bethesda, Maryland (Hard Times Cafe).

I was first turned on to Teddy when he was part of "Harold Melvin and The Blue Notes." I cannot recall if "Wake Up Everybody" or "The Love I Lost" was the first "Teddy" song that I had heard growing up. I recall riding a Greyhound bus through the then much smaller Southern city of Atlanta in 1973 listening to the overnight jock at WQXI-AM (790) as he introduced "The Love I Lost." That song and that introduction are burned into my memory. Over the years, I grew to love Teddy's music, much of which is played on SoulClassics247.com. It seems like only yesterday that the smooth soul of Al Green was all over the radio. The man behind the Al green sound, Willie Mitchell died recently (Jan 5th) of cardiac arrest at age 81 in Memphis, Tennessee. Williw Mitchell was known for the Memphis sound and, in the case of Al green, Had a specific microphone set aside for Al green that no one elsewas allowed to use that helped Al achieve the "Al Green" sound. Dee Dee Warwick is the younger sister of Dione Warwick and a cousin of Whitney Houston. The soul in this family is unbelievable. God's gifts have reigned down on this family. Rumor has it that Led Zeppelin's "D'yer Maker" is a tribute to the drums on this cut.

As we add new cuts to soulclassics247.com, we try to add music of significance to the era. This song "Foolish Fool" was released in 1969 and peaked at #14 on the R&B charts that year. While her sister Dionne was burning up the charts with her more pop sounding hits, Dee Dee, equally talented, never made it to the Top 40 with any significant airplay. Joel Whitburn's "The Billboard Book of Top 40 Hits (8th Edition)" makes no reference to Dee Dee Warwick in the list of artists.

Obesity and Poor Education Make it Tough to Get into the Military

An interesting article in this morning's Washington Post on page A25 (Don't worry, we'll have the link for you). Unbelievable, the article states that "About 75% of the country's 17 to 24 year olds are ineligible for military service largely because they are poorly educated, , overweight..." OH there's more... but this is real sad! Did the article mean 75% of potential recruits or 75% of all 17 to 24 year olds in America? It wasn't clear. Yesterday, I read a short blurb in the Wall Street Journal that nearly half of the kids growing up in America today will receive food stamps at some time in their child hood. Is this the same America I grew up in? No wonder this country is soon to join the worlds also rans.

In Today's Sunday edition of the Washington Post (Nov 1st, 2009), there is an interesting article titled "5 Myths about our land of Opportunity." If you are wondering why you or others in your community are not getting ahead, perhaps this will help bust some of the myths. The most astonishing is that households that are headed by one parent are FIVE TIMES more likely to live in poverty. Nowadays, as many as 30% of all women who give birth under age 30 are not married (or presumably without a partner). This is a quick interesting read.

The soul is still being added frequently. We are also going to be updating our web site at SoulClassics247.com in the next few weeks. We have already made a few changes to our streaming package. We know how our listeners dislike interruptions and we have tried to minimize that and still support the ability to keep bringing you more and more classic soul. If you have a FREE live365.com logon you probably haven't noticed much of a change than previously except we are now running a few of the live365.com commercials (and I mean a few). The commercials and promotional items seem to be a total of about 4 minutes per hour. That is way less than commercial radio. Why the ads? The cost of bringing you all these soul classics has continued to rise while our revenue has declined from station advertsing. The alternative would be just to shut down and then "Oh well, no more soul classics." We hope you will understand and continue to be a loyal listener. The good news, we now have the ability to practically double our playlist over the next few weeks and months and we intend to do so as we find great classic soul to add. Biography: Ruby Collins has slowly built a devout grassroot following. Her songs are about relationships, love, and marriage. Born in Brooklyn, New York Ruby began singing at the age of three but did not begin singing publicaly until the age of fourteen as the lead singer in her church choir. As Ruby over came her shyness she stepped into the world of talent shows performing at local community and school talent shows throughout the tri-state area. It wasn't until her appearance on televisions "Show Time at The Apollo" that Ruby knew that her musical journey had begun. In 1993 Ruby's mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. Ruby joined the New York City Police Department as a means to help support the family financially. Distraught by her mothers illness Ruby put her dreams on hold but soon realized that the police department could use for a voice like hers. After six month of rigorous training Ruby received the opportunity to share a more sweeter and softer side of her, that her colleagues had never seen before. Ruby sang the national anthem for her police academy graduation singing at Madison Square Garden before five thousand attendees receiving her first write up in the local Daily News. It wasn't before long that Ruby became a household name within the New York City Police Department. She sang everywhere from community breakfasts in the back of the station house, to the New York Knicks game and eventually to the Nations Capitol. In 1995 when the Nations Capitol, in Washington DC came calling looking for a singer to sing the national anthem for the Annual National Police Officer Memorial. After a brief audition in which Ruby sang to the organizer of the program over the phone she was pegged for the job. President Bill Clinton, Mariah Carey, and Tommy Matolla who attended the ceremony that day were not the only ones to experience the sweet voice of Ruby Collins but the event was televised nationally via C-Span and the entire country experienced the amazing voice of the police officer behind the uniform. Ruby's rendition of "Wind Beneath My Wings" recorded by Bette Middler and her amazing rendition of the National Anthem. That day there wasn't a dry eye in the house. Ruby Collins soon began making appearances on talk shows including the, "Rosie O'Donnel Show," "Oxygen Media", "Positively Black", "Good Day New York" and opened for the Legendary group Blue Magic. In 2000 Ruby released her first gospel album on her independent label Senga Music with Producer Tom McConnell selling over 5000 copies to major chains like Virgin Mega, Tower Records, HMV and local mom's and pop record shops. Billboard Magazine reviewed the album stating "Ruby's forte is smooth jazzy pop/gospel amalgam dazzingly reminiscent of Early Robert Flack." After 911 Ruby decided to follow her passion and pursue her music career. Ruby went back to school earning a Masters in Education becoming a school teacher. She also taught herself to play piano and guitar, and released "Merry Christmas" a classic acoustic piano Christmas album in 2005. Inspired by her experiences of being a mother, wife, police officer, and changing her career to follow her passion Ruby developed her songwriting skills and returned to the studio to release her third album "In My Dreams," an eclectic blend of soul, pop, and jazz. Nobody said the music business is easy but Ruby said she is not about to give up. Ruby has just completed her fourth album and is due to be released in 2008 and it's better than ever.

Isaac Hayes - The Passing of A Legend

Caught up in the wonderful weather here in the D.C. area over the weekend, it was difficult to sit down in front of my computer to write about the passing of a music legend. I had just read in the Sunday (August 10th, 2008) Washington Post about an election in Memphis where Isaac Hayes had actively supported Steve Cohen (Caucasian) against another African American candidate. I had not heard of Mr. Hayes passing at this point. The article was timely in that it reminded me of Mr. Hayes talents in areas other than just music (noted below in Feb 15th article).

I was first introduced to Isaac Hayes music as a youngster when the movie "Shaft" came out. Although I was more into bubble bum pop and soul at the time, I vividly remember the song and heard it so many times that I could, and still can, recite it almost note for note.

Most people in the general population primarily knew Isaac Hayes from the "Theme from Shaft." However, Isaac Hayes was an icon within Stax records and the music industry. I am re-publishing a blog with links from February of this year on Mr. Hayes accomplishments. May he rest in peace.

Isaac Hayes helped create the Memphis Sound at Stax Records and was a major influence in music in the 1960s and 1970s. He began his career at age 5 singing in the church and self taught himself to play musical instruments such as the piano, saxophone, and the organ. He played the Memphis club circuit and about 1964 joined the Mar-Kays on the Stax label. He performed as a house musician composing and performing with such great artists as Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, Johnny Taylor. Hayes recorded several albums under his own name starting in 1967, when he recorded Presenting Isaac Hayes after a wild party at Stax Records. He finally sold commercially with his 1969 album Hot Buttered Soul but it wasn't until the soundtrack from the movie Shaft was recorded in 1971. He was the first African American to win an Academy Award for a "Best Score."

In 1974, Hayes, and his partners, purchased the American Basketball Association and the Memphis Tams. He changed their name to the Memphis Sounds. The team did not do well and had financial problems. It was sold to a Baltimore group who changed the name to the Baltimore Hustlers and then the Baltimore Claws. The team folded in 1975.

Hayes continued to record through the mid 1980s although his records did not do as well as they had in the past. He moved from recording to acting abut in 1995 returned to the studio to record Branded and Raw and Refined. He became part of the Royal family in Ghana under the official name of Nene Katey Ocansey I. Hayes became the voice of "Chef" McElroy in the cartoon Southpark and was later in the movie South Park: Bigger, Longer. Isaac Hayes appeared in the remake of Shaft starring Samuel L. Jackson in 2000. Since then he arranged and performed with Alicia Keyes on her debut Songs in A Minor. in 2006, Hayes left Southpark due to its irreverance toward religion.

There are a few rules to follow and common sense will dictate. We don't want to hear from any lawyers and we will point them directly to you if you are being naughty. This is not all inclusive, but, for example, we will NOT accept inflammatory speech, music , hate speech, topics that promote government overthrow or terrorist activities. If you are providing a program you will need to certify the content and that it meets certain requirements. We reserve the right to decline your program and refund your money if we have any doubts about your program content.

All programs must be provided to us at least three days in advance of the air date and must contain a contact telephone number and e-mail address. They must be in MP3 format. Any programs requiring conversion from another format such as .Wav or .wma are subject to an additional $25.00 conversion fee per program.

We can offer this low rate of $5 (or less) per DAY because you provide us the program and all we do is schedule it and air it for you. There are no listener number guarantees. You will need to promote your own program. We will give you a scheduled time. However, the current maximum number of simultaneous listeners is 50 unless your audience has a Live365.com VIP Pass. In that case there are no limits.

We are not offering programs via a live feed or live relay at this time. As noted above, your program must be in MP3 format and delivered to us 72 hours (3 days) prior to air. We will confirm receipt.

Independent Artists Page is moving to IndieArtists247 Forum

We are building a brand new Digital CD quality Independent Artists station. We expect it to be on the air no later than tax day (April 15th) 2008 and it could be sooner.

To celebrate the new station, we have developed a completely separate site to showcase the artists. Many , if not all,of the artists from the SoulClassics247.com "Classic Soul Community blog" will move over to this new site. Those that are already existing on the SoulClassics247.com site will stay there as well as be on the new site.

The station will launch from SoulClassics247.com. Details on that later. The reason behind this is the requirements under the royalty license that is held for the operation of these internet stations. Long story. You need a lawyer to understand it. To stay legal, the station will launch from SoulClassics247.com. SoulClassics247.com will be linked from the IndieArtists247.com site. Although we will barely meet the maximum "recommended" three click rule (two preferred) to get around on the internet, it is the best we can do and keep this affordable. I hope you enjoy the new station. Artists and music will be rotated in and out to keep it fresh. More artists will be on the blog page at http://indie.SoulClassics247.net, including those being rotated in and out.

There will also be the opportunity to purchase the CDs and/or downloads of these independent artists. We are working on that now.

From his humble Motown upbringing, Michael Paul's musical journey has encompassed all the traditional and untraditional stops, from playing with garage bands in the Northeast, to ultimately heading to California to front the band "Deep Under Green," an angst-filled group that blasted the West coast with full-fledged grunge-rock.

When that medium burned out--fueled by debt and mismanagement, the band members went their separate ways. But, Paul invested in his own recording equipment and has "worn all the hats" for the next two releases as a solo artist-releasing "Repetitive Motion Syndrome" and the EP, "Reach," as Paul found a new vehicle for his emotion-the piano.
