Soul Superstar Teddy Pendergrass - No One Else Like Him

Teddy Pendergrass, One of my favorite soul singers of all time, finally succumbed to his long battle with colon cancer on Wednesday night. This morning while listening to "Soul Town" on Sirius/XM, I noticed a long sweep of Teddy Pendergrass tunes. While I enjoyed this very much, I began to wonder if teddy had died. My mind wondered for a moment thinking "didn't he pass away awhile back?" In the hustle and bustle of everyday life, it sometimes hard to remember who has passed on to the other side and who is still with us. As it turns out, teddy Pendergrass did pass away and was part of the discussion at the table at lunch today in Bethesda, Maryland (Hard Times Cafe).

I was first turned on to Teddy when he was part of "Harold Melvin and The Blue Notes." I cannot recall if "Wake Up Everybody" or "The Love I Lost" was the first "Teddy" song that I had heard growing up. I recall riding a Greyhound bus through the then much smaller Southern city of Atlanta in 1973 listening to the overnight jock at WQXI-AM (790) as he introduced "The Love I Lost." That song and that introduction are burned into my memory. Over the years, I grew to love Teddy's music, much of which is played on SoulClassics247.com. The following is a link to an NPR article on Teddy Pendergrass.

Foolish Fool - Dee Dee Warwick

Dee Dee Warwick is the younger sister of Dione Warwick and a cousin of Whitney Houston. The soul in this family is unbelievable. God's gifts have reigned down on this family. Rumor has it that Led Zeppelin's "D'yer Maker" is a tribute to the drums on this cut.

As we add new cuts to soulclassics247.com, we try to add music of significance to the era. This song "Foolish Fool" was released in 1969 and peaked at #14 on the R&B charts that year. While her sister Dionne was burning up the charts with her more pop sounding hits, Dee Dee, equally talented, never made it to the Top 40 with any significant airplay. Joel Whitburn's  "The Billboard Book of Top 40 Hits (8th Edition)" makes no reference to Dee Dee Warwick in the list of artists.

SoulClassics247.com plays several of Dee Dee's R&B Hits including " I Want TO Be With You" and "I'm Gonna Make You Love Me," and, of course, "Foolish Fool."  Dee Dee warwick has other great R&B hits like "She Didn't Know (She Kept on Talking), A Top 10 R&B Hit.

Enjoy and keep jamming on the greatest soul of all time on SoulClassics247.com

Obesity and Poor Education Make it Tough to Get into the Military

An interesting article in this morning's Washington Post on page A25 (Don't worry, we'll have the link for you). Unbelievable, the article states that "About 75% of the country's 17 to 24 year olds are ineligible for military service largely because they are poorly educated, , overweight..." OH there's more... but this is real sad! Did the article mean 75% of potential recruits or 75% of all 17 to 24 year olds in America? It wasn't clear. Yesterday, I read a short blurb in the Wall Street Journal that nearly half of the kids growing up in America today will receive food stamps at some time in their child hood. Is this the same America I grew up in? No wonder this country is soon to join the worlds also rans.

Interesting Article/Statistics on The Myths of Making it In America

In Today's Sunday edition of the Washington Post (Nov 1st, 2009), there is an interesting article titled "5 Myths about our land of Opportunity." If you are wondering why you or others in your community are not getting ahead, perhaps this will help bust some of the myths. The most astonishing is that households that are headed by one parent are FIVE TIMES more likely to live in poverty. Nowadays, as many as 30% of all women who give birth under age 30 are not married (or presumably without a partner). This is a quick interesting read.

SoulClassics247.com Updates

I'd like to thank our loyal listeners to SoulClasssics247.com over the past 2 years plus. We have been playing classic soul with minimum interruptions since August 2007. The soul is still being added frequently. We are also going to be updating our web site at SoulClassics247.com in the next few weeks. We have already made a few changes to our streaming package. We know how our listeners dislike interruptions and we have tried to minimize that and still support the ability to keep bringing you more and more classic soul. If you have a FREE live365.com logon you probably haven't noticed much of a change than previously except we are now running a few of the live365.com commercials (and I mean a few). The commercials and promotional items seem to be a total of about 4 minutes per hour. That is way less than commercial radio. Why the ads? The cost of bringing you all these soul classics has continued to rise while our revenue has declined from station advertsing. The alternative would be just to shut down and then "Oh well, no more soul classics." We hope you will understand and continue to be a loyal listener. Keep in mind you can always get a VIP pass and listen commercial free while supporting SoulClassics247.com.

The good news, we now have the ability to practically double our playlist over the next few weeks and months and we intend to do so as we find great classic soul to add. This week alone we have added James Browns "Hot Pants," We have also added Teddy Pendergrass and "The Whole Town's Laughing at Me." We have also added a classic from The Moonglows, "The Ten Commandments of Love" as well as the Chi-Lites and "Stoned Out of My Mind." The soul classics are still coming and we will continue to add them and let you know whats new on the playlist as time permits. Speaking of time, you are likely to hear them before we get around to telling you we have added them. In any case, just keep on listening and thanks again for being a part of our success.

Katrise

Katrise

Webpage: http://Katrise.bandvista.com
Location: Orlando, FL, USA
Description: R & B, inspirational, heart felt, emotional, melodic, harmonic
Biography: Katrise (aka Double A) is an Orlando based songwriter who also produces her own songs. With 12 years of recording and production experience, she has collaborated with a wide array of writers and artists. Double A is most influenced by R & B and grew up listening to artists such as Stevie Wonder, Earth, Wind, & Fire, Natalie Cole, Lauryn Hill, Tony Toni Tone, and The Temptations. Nevertheless, her primary influence has not stopped her from challenging herself with other genres from Reggae to Rock. She calls herself an, “all around producer/songwriter.”

One of her most notable collaborations are with locally known Kendra Legare and B Rob. Alongside Kendra, she co-wrote lyrics, performed, recorded, and mixed “Keep it Light,” which won 13th place overall in Broadjam’s Six Pack Contest under the ‘What Does it Say?’ category landing the trio among the top 20 finalists. It won 6th place within the category itself.

Double A has also collaborated with Chicagoland’s Songs 2 Share President, Roberta Annicks on songs such as “uBoy,” “Fly in the Kitchen,” and “Just This Once” all available for license through Songs2Share.com. Both “uBoy” and “Fly in the Kitchen,” contain lyrics written by Annicks, with Katrise providing the musical arrangements, performance, and production on the tracks. “Just This Once,” lyrics by both Annicks and Schroeter, was also arranged, produced, and performed by Katrise. The Double A remix has proven to be quite a hit with her Facebook audience. Some of them have even attached the song to their profiles.

Other notable projects include her co-writing with Boston based writer Shawn Lopes on tracks such as “Half Step/Whole Step,” “Good Girls,” and “When I See You,” all Artistopia chart toppers in the R & B category. Furthermore, Double A composed, arranged, and produced the entire musical soundtrack for popular Purdue University news magazine show, “The Fast Track” while working on her BA degree in West Lafayette, IN. The show had quite a following on the local level with some 35,000+ student viewers. Others outside of the campus community in surrounding areas of Lafayette could view the show as well through the local news station WLFI channel 18.

With a plethora of collaborations under her belt and years of recording and producing experience, Double A is ready to take her music to the next level. She has and will continue to submit songs to music licensing companies for inclusion on television, film, and other forms of media. With so many Indies and majors trying to make it, her goal is to create a need for her “music vision.” She aspires to be the go-to source for all things music. Further down the line, Double A will reach out to major record labels, pitching songs to artists and/or apply for work as a staff writer.

Although the music industry is one of the toughest industries ever to get into, especially for writers and producers, this long time producer/songwriter will not give up. She loves music too much to quit. This multi-faceted, ever harmonic, unquestionably talented writer will soon find her permanent place in this business. She says to all creatively inclined people out there to, “Embrace the music vision!”
